Welcome! I'm Lauren, the wife and mother behind Brave Schooling. I started this website to provide a community of support, resources and more for both Neurodiverse homeschoolers AND families who want their children to learn more than just "reading, writing and arthimetic." (Our resources are happily used by Neurotypical families as well)!
We are a whole family of Neurodiverse super powers. We have ADD/ADHD, SPD, ASD, APD and possibly Dyslexia. Let's just say our house can be a lot of fun and crazy at times when our individual ND's are in full swing!
Needless to say, I know quite intimately the challenges of homeschooling, and especially homeschooling Neurodiverse children (while being ND myself)!
There are so many amazing Neurotypical homeschooling blogs, websites and educational platforms out there. My hope is that this site is a comfort zone and resource specifically for those facing the extra challenges of ND homeschooling.
I also hope that our unit studies based on (what I consider essential life skills) resonates with you and provides learning opportunities that support a more wholistic approach by teaching valuable knowledge needed for any aspect of life in adulthood.
Before starting this venture I wrote and illustrated 3 fictional children's books on different Neurodiversities; with the protagonist finding their super-power through their unique challenges. I felt it was important for children to see themselves as the hero of a book, instead of the hero always being different from them. Inclusion and understanding is something I want all kids to feel, and I want ND kids to embrace their super powers instead of being embarrassed by them.
So, Welcome to Brave Schooling! Where it takes bravery to be the teacher, for our kids to homeschool with challenges, and to not follow the public school system norms. So sit down, grab that (most likely cold) cup of coffee and join the journey!
Our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. We strive to create a supportive learning community that fosters growth, creativity, and innovation. At Brave Schooling, we are committed to helping all kids achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
We are a little more "avant-garde" in our approach. We aren't un-schoolers, but we aren't hard knocks traditional homeschoolers either. We fall somewhere in-between. We believe education is important, but just as, or more, important is the whole child. Mentally, Emotionally, Spiritually. Life skills and values are a large part of our daily learning. We are to be in this world, not of this world. We don't do traditional public school for a reason, and we hope you join us in this mission.
Joshua 1:9
Psalm 127:4-5
We believe that learning should be engaging, interactive, and FUN! We all enjoy things a lot more when we are passionate about what we are doing, or are at least enjoying it. We aim to provide resources that will help you make this path a fun one for you and your kids; because homeschool should be fun and homeschooling information should be easy to find.
Why do we call it Brave Schooling? Because it takes bravery to go against the norm (traditional school) and choose the right path for your family. It takes bravery to trust that you are making the right decision for your children and their futures. It takes bravery to educate with neuordiversities. And because God said:
" Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
To teach your child in a way that is against the norm is something that takes strength and courage. Brave Schooling wants to help you and your kids to feel confident and to not be discouraged. And trust that your kids will THRIVE!
