ELA Curriculum 26 Week Outlines

Neurodivergent students can benefit significantly from  specialized ELA curricula because traditional approaches may not adequately address their unique challenges or learning styles. Tailoring content and teaching methods to fit their strengths and needs can greatly enhance their engagement and progress.

ADD/ADHD (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with ADHD may struggle with attention, impulsivity, and organizing their thoughts, which makes long or monotonous writing tasks difficult.

  • Benefit: A curriculum with shorter, varied tasks, opportunities for movement, and built-in focus aids can keep them engaged and help them develop writing skills in a way that accommodates their need for stimulation.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with ASD may struggle with social communication, imaginative language, and sensory sensitivities. A traditional curriculum can be overwhelming due to the amount of open-ended writing and lack of visual or structured cues.

  • Benefit: A curriculum that offers clear, concrete instructions, visual supports, and breaks to avoid sensory overload would be more effective. Engaging, hands-on activities and short, focused lessons help keep students engaged without overwhelming them.

Dyslexia (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with dyslexia often have difficulty with reading fluency, spelling, and organizing their thoughts in writing. Traditional writing exercises can be frustrating and discouraging.

  • Benefit: A curriculum that incorporates multisensory learning techniques (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities) and tools like speech-to-text can help them express their ideas without getting stuck on spelling or grammar.

Hyperlexia (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with hyperlexia may have advanced reading abilities but struggle with comprehension, inferencing, and creative writing tasks. A traditional curriculum may focus too much on skills they’ve already mastered while not addressing comprehension issues.

  • Benefit: A specialized curriculum that emphasizes inferencing, comprehension strategies, and scaffolds creative writing can help develop weaker skills while keeping students engaged.

Aphantasia (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with aphantasia have difficulty visualizing images in their mind, which can impact creative writing that relies on vivid descriptions or imagination-based tasks.

  • Benefit: A curriculum that focuses on concrete details, structured prompts, and sensory-based writing (not reliant on visualization) can help these students succeed. Dysgraphia (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Dysgraphia affects handwriting and fine motor skills, which can make the physical act of writing difficult and painful. Traditional writing tasks can be overwhelming for students with dysgraphia.

  • Benefit: A curriculum that allows for alternate ways of writing (e.g., typing, dictation) and focuses on developing ideas without penalizing poor handwriting would be ideal.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) (1st-6th Grade)

  • Why: Students with APD have difficulty processing spoken language, which can affect their ability to follow verbal instructions or comprehend spoken stories or lessons.

  • Benefit: A curriculum that includes visual supports, written instructions, and minimizes reliance on auditory instructions helps reduce confusion and allows for independent learning.
